Biochar

Biochar provides three simple solutions for three global issues

- Climate change:
Biochar is a stable way to store carbon for long periods of time by working as a carbon sink that can effectively capture and lock it in the soil, representing a solution with a potential to remove huge amounts of net CO2 emissions from the atmosphere.
- Food security:
Due to the nutrient and water retaining capabilities of Biochar, it is a valuable soil enhancer. Combined with our other products, the need for traditional fertilizers is significantly reduced. This decreases the concentration of contaminants and emissions derived from conventional agricultural practices while at the same time achieving soils with higher fertility and environmental quality. The result is more production per hectare with a better crop quality.
- Energy security:
Biochar is produced by a waste to energy technology that captures CO2 and generates clean and sustainable energy securing energy supply and increasing energy security. Not only substituting the use of fossil fuels for the production of energy but also resolving a waste problem helping to eliminate contaminants and emissions associated to waste.

Biochar may represent the single most important initiative for humanity’s environmental future. Biochar is produced as a by-product of waste gasification in our patented pyrolysis refinery. Integrating Biochar in our waste-to-energy process we will capture 500.000 tons of CO2 per year in each standard sized plant.
Biochar benefits:

  • Agriculture:

    • Increasing fertility of soil

    • Increasing crop yields and quality

    • Improving food security

  • Local ecosystems:

    • Helping retain water

    • Reducing irrigation needs

    • Reducing leaching of nutrients, creating a higher crop uptake of nutrients and providing greater soil availability of nutrients.

    • Reducing contaminant levels in plants by up to 80%

    • Improving water quality

  • Climate change:

    • Reduces need for fossil fuel based synthetic fertilizers and energy production.

    • Sequestering carbon in the soil

    • Decreasing emissions, N2O emissions up to 80% and methane emissions up to 100%
